Three Tips for a Stress-Free Vacation
* Written by guest blogger, Joyce Wilson of Teacher Spark

Vacations should be a time for you to get away from everything and relax. In fact, studies show that vacations can reduce stress and cut your risk of heart attack. Vacations can make you feel good and help you recharge, but too often, we don’t reap the full benefits of vacation time. If you’re feeling stressed while you’re on vacation, then you aren’t benefiting from the break. Here are some tips from exquisitEXCHANGE, for having a stress-free, enjoyable vacation.

1. Keep your home safe from burglaries.

One of the most stressful parts of going on vacation is worrying about your home. You should take steps to protect your home ahead of time. First, inspect your doors and windows and make sure their locks work properly. If they don’t work, fix them yourself or hire someone to do it for you. You should install motion-sensing lights near your exterior entrances. Many models are battery operated and do not require any additional wiring or professional work.

If you’re willing to invest a little more money in your home’s security, you can even have a security system installed. According to My Alarm System, with a security system, you will be able to monitor your home from anywhere, and you will be notified if anyone breaks in. You should take some time to consider the pros and cons of different security systems before spending. If you don’t want to invest in a full security system, Ring Doorbell cameras or Blink outdoor cameras are great alternatives.

To be safe, avoid sharing details about your trip on social media. Updating your status when you depart or sharing photos from the airport could put your home at risk to potential burglars. If you feel compelled to share your travel details on social media, double-check your privacy settings and make sure that only your closest friends and relatives have access to your trip details.

2. Choose the right location.

One mistake people make when planning a vacation is failing to think about how their destination will affect their stress levels. Planning a trip to a large, bustling city like New York City might sound fun, but if you get stressed out by crowds, it is the last place you should visit to maximize the mental health benefits of time off.

Westgate Resorts notes that you should take some time to consider your ideal vacation location to make the most of your trip. For example, you might be drawn to the tranquility of mountain resorts. Or maybe you’ve been dying to go to relax on a golden beach shore. If you’re a nature person, you should look for nearby National Parks. If you unwind best when you’re interacting with others, you should look for a place with a lot of people and local clubs. You should also keep in mind what events are offered in particular locations. Choose the place that works for you.

Once you’ve chosen your destination, decide where you’ll stay. For example, if you’re headed to Orlando, it might be tempting to stay at a Walt Disney Resort, but it will likely be more affordable to stay in a vacation rental that’s close to the Disney attractions. Not only will you save money, but renting a vacation home will give you all a quiet place to decompress after your days at the parks. Making these kinds of considerations when deciding where to stay can really give your trip a boost.

3. Plan ahead (realistically).

Before you go on vacation, make arrangements at work so that you can fully enjoy your time off. If you own your own business, this will require quite a bit of planning ahead so develop a vacation strategy that will allow you to leave the work at home. It might include steps such as putting a trusted employee in charge while you’re away, giving your other employees the info they need to troubleshoot problems that arise, and limiting yourself to one hour per day of email checking while you're vacationing. If you’re an employee, you can take similar steps -- finish up any important projects, have a coworker cover any of your urgent tasks while you’re gone, and check in once per day (if needed).

Once you’ve got work squared away, you can start planning your actual trip. You should put together a list of the items you want to take with you. This way, you won’t forget any of the essentials. Don’t forget the fun things, too. If you’re planning on stargazing, you’ll need to take a telescope with you. If you want to have a game of beach volleyball, you’ll need to bring a ball and net. Keep in mind that you can always buy supplies once you reach your destination, but it’s a good idea to have everything prepped before you head out.

One of the most important steps to having a fulfilling vacation is planning ahead. Know the area you’ll be visiting, so you don’t get lost. Make sure you have a reliable map of the area and a good idea of the places you want to go to. Once you get to your destination, you can always explore and find new places that aren’t on the map.

Be flexible about your plans, so you don’t end up stressed when they go awry. You should also be careful about planning too many activities into your vacation as having too much to do could also cause stress. Give yourself some time between activities to relax and enjoy the moment.

You can stress less when you’re on vacation if you keep your home safe from burglaries, avoid destinations that increase your stress, and have a plan before you depart. You’ll reap the mental benefits of your time off if you take the time to protect your home and ensure you have chosen an ideal destination.
