A Foodie's Guide to Houston, Part 2
Once again, I find myself reiterating that Houston is a foodie's paradise. From burgers to burritos, Indian to Italian, and Cantonese to Japanese, Houston's restaurants continue to impress us in quantity, quality, and diversity.

Vincent's Restaurant

1. Vincent's Restaurant

Housed in the former home of the Palazzo family, who arrived in Houston at the beginning of the 1900's, Vincent's is known for its wood burning, open flame rotisserie. This Tuscan-themed Italian restaurant opened its doors in 1984, making pizzas daily from freshly made dough and house-made sauces made from locally grown products.

The rotisserie chicken is tender inside with a crispy, nicely-seasoned outside. The wood-grilled pizza with its thin crust and tasty toppings secured itself as one of our favorite pizzas in Houston. Don't skip dessert! The pistachio-crusted cannolis are divine!

2. churrascos

Churrascos is one of several Cordúa family restaurants known for its bold South American flavors. We have never had a bad experience at Churrascos, with their attentive staff, savory ceviches, tasty tacos, succulent shrimp dishes, delectable desserts, and much more!

3. Birraporetti's

One of the first brunches we enjoyed when we first moved to Houston years ago was at Birraporetti's. Their live jazz brunch is such a special treat. Located in the heart of the theater district and open till midnight every day, Birraporetti's is the perfect place for an after-show night cap and late dinner. Their catchy slogan, “A great Italian Restaurant… A heck of an Irish bar," rings true, with tasty Italian food and an Irish pub atmosphere. Having opened in 1974, Birraporetti's is also one of Houston's oldest restaurants.

Hearsay Gastro Lounge

4. Hearsay Gastro Lounge

Housed in the old W.L. Foley Building, built in 1889, Hearsay opened its doors in 2009 and became a quick favorite for the downtown crowd. We absolutely love the vibe, with the combination of chic decor against brick walls, plus soaring ceilings. The food is amazing too! You cannot pass up the Southern Mac & Cheese - it is worth every. single. calorie. Try the calamari and shrimp appetizer and don't skip dessert!

Join them on Market Square for happy hour, Monday through Friday from 3:30-6:30.

5. Torchy's Tacos

This large Houston taco chain keeps it simple. Their menu consists of tacos, - with names like Trailer Park, Brushfire, Crossroads, and Tipsy Chicken - chips and dips, a burrito, and a salad option for good measure. For a good punch to your taste buds, put the Diablo Sauce on everything!

Happy hour is Monday-Friday, 3-6, with some drink specials all day Saturday and Sunday.

Hugo's

6. Hugo's

For my 35th birthday this year, Marvin told me he would take to me any restaurant I wanted. After hours of research, I concluded that Hugo's was the place to go, and, golly, did I choose the right place for a birthday dinner! The service was impeccable, the ambiance cozy and quiet (in spite of having every table full), the appetizers and main course divine, and the desserts luscious.

Located in Montrose, Hugo's perfectly replicates authentic Mexican flavors, from ceviches and empanadas to taquitos and moles.

McGonigel's Mucky Duck

7. McGonigel's Mucky Duck

This Irish pub and restaurant known for its daily live music features a menu of Scotch egg, Shepherd's pie, beef Guinness, fish & chips, and more delightful treats. We spent a Thursday evening recently watching Bob Schneider, a popular Austin singer. The music was nice, the service was exemplary, and the food was delectable! We felt like we were back in Ireland for the evening!

Barnaby's Cafe

8. Barnaby's Cafe

Barnaby's has been a favorite of mine for several years. Full disclosure, I get salads every. single. time I go. I always go in thinking, "Maybe today I'll try something else from their menu," but inevitably I order a salad. In my defense though, their salads are off-the-chain good!

The Houston chain is named for Barnaby, a Sheepdog who currently resides in heaven (because all dogs go to heaven - duh!), or, as owner Jeff Gale envisions, travels around the world, snorkeling, fishing, and riding camels.

Location:
2802 White Oak Dr #500, Houston, TX 77007 (This is their Heights location, but they have several other locations around Houston. The original Barnaby's is on Fairview.)

Off The Beaten Path

The General Public

9. The General Public

At the far end of City Centre lies a fabulous restaurant with great food, fantastic service, and some really fun promotions. The late-night crowd can partake in Bourbon and Burgers - $5 for nearly a dozen bourbons and a handful of cocktails, plus $5 burgers - available from 9 to 11, Monday through Friday. You'll also love the tuna nachos and crab hushpuppies! And, if that's not enough, if you're there at sunset, you can participate in the bartender's sunset toast.

Happy hour is Monday through Friday from 3-6. They also feature a special called Rosé All Day, with $4 rosé and a rusky rose mixed drink before 5:00.

Location: 797 Sorella Ct, Houston, TX 77024

Urban American Kitchen

10. Urban Kitchen

Urban American Kitchen spotlights New American cuisine and is easily one of my favorite places for a good salad, with options like steak salad, shrimp salad, tuna salad, and salmon salad. Their tasty salads, soups, and sandwiches have made Urban Kitchen one of my favorite lunch spots!

A Foodie's Guide to Houston, Part 2; Tiger Noodle House; Where to eat in Houston; Best Houston Restaurants
Tiger Noodle House

11. Tiger Noodle House

Walking into Tiger Noodle House, located in a little strip mall off i10, I wasn't sure what to expect. I hadn't read any reviews, I hadn't looked at the menu, and I hadn't been recommended there by someone I knew. I simply wanted some Chinese food and it was nearby.

I was absolutely blown away by the delicious food! I ordered dumplings and a spicy lamb dish with noodles. I ate every last dumpling and a few bites of the lamb, but decided that, for the sake of my waist line, and because I love my husband, I would bring the rest home and share with him. He loved it as much as I did, even reheated, and made me promise to take him next time I go.

For the Sweet Tooth

A Foodie's Guide to Houston, Part 2; Dolce Neve; gelateria; Where to eat in Houston; Best Houston Restaurants
Dolce Neve

12. Dolce Neve

Gelato is my kryptonite. Though I've always had a sweet tooth, some sweets I can easily turn down with a little will-power. Gelato and Boston Creme Donuts are the exceptions.

Having some time to kill before heading to a book signing (Matt Kepnes' book signing; not my book signing), I popped into Dolce Neve (literally "Sweet Snow," which I think is just darling) for gelato and a latte. This cute little shop in an unassuming strip mall deserves more attention than it seems to get.

Right off the bat, I was impressed with the interesting variety of flavors. Though they had the standard vanilla, hazelnut, and tiramisu, they also had some more inventive flavors like ricotta/honey/pistachio and honeydew melon sorbet. I chose oatmilk/pecan/maple syrup and mascarpone and figs. Both flavors were divine, but those soft bits of fig were a literal party in my mouth.

Dolce Neve, I'll be back!
