Best Travel Books for Kids: A Book List for Young Explorers
Introducing children to the wonders of the world through literature is a delightful way to spark their curiosity, wanderlust, and sense of adventure. Whether it's through general adventure stories or books set in fascinating far-off countries, these books provide a gateway for children to explore the globe from the comfort of their own homes. Whether you are a parent or an educator, if you are seeking to inspire the next generation of globetrotters, take a look at this list.

Kids' Picture Books

Travel Books for Infants and Toddlers
Travel Books for Infants and Toddlers
I'm a big fan of the Good Night Our World books for infants and young toddlers. These board books are a great way to introduce your tiniest readers to your favorite places, including Good Night America, Good Night Houston, Good Night Florida, Good Night Italy, Good Night Campsite, Good Night Lake, Good Night Beach, and many more.

For the littlest littles, I also love Daniel's Day at the Beach, a Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood board book, and The Berenstain Bears at Big Fun Park by Stan and Jan Berenstain, both of which highlight some fun activities for little adventurers.
Kids' Books About Ways to Travel
Kids' Books About Ways to Travel
Kids tend to love books about ways to travel. My son is a big fan of anything with wheels, so some of his favorites are A Dragon in a Wagon by Jane Belk Moncure, On the Train by Carron Brown and Bee Johnson, and Richard Scarry's Cars and Trucks and Things That Go.

Other vehicle options include I Spy Vehicles by Marlies Larch and The Ultimate Book of Vehicles: From Around the World by Anne-Sophie Baumann.

For books about hot air balloon travel, read Raccoon and the Hot Air Balloon by Jill Atkins and Curious George and the Hot Air Balloon by Margret and H. A. Rey.
Kids' Picture Books About Specific Places
Kids' Picture Books About Specific Places
I love books that teach kids about specific places! Katie in London by James Mayhew is a beautifully illustrated book with a great story about the London adventures of a young girl named Katie and her brother Jack. Madeline in London by Ludwig Bemelmans is a classic that is a favorite in our house. What kid doesn't love a good sticker book? I have been holding onto The Sticker Atlas of Scotland by Benedict Blathwayt until Emmett gets just a bit older, but I know he will have so much fun with this exciting atlas of Scotland. These books all mention famous landmarks in the different countries where they take place.

The State Shapes books are such fun books for kids to learn about the individual states of the United States of America. You can do 50 States: A State-by-State Tour of the USA or choose individual books. We have New York already, and I have Texas in my Amazon cart at the moment!

For more books about New York, check out A Walk in New York by Salvatore Rubbino, New York City by Paula Hannigan, and The Wicked Big Toddlah Goes to New York by Kevin Hawkes, where the main characters explore sights like Central Park and Times Square.
Kids' Books About Different Types of Vacations
Kids' Books About Different Types of Vacations
Another favorite category of mine are books that teach kids about different types of adventures, like road trips, beach vacations, and camping getaways. In Big Bird's Road Trip, Big Bird travels to California, meeting lots of new friends along the way. A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee by Chris Van Dusen is a cute picture book with a rhyming story of a camping trip that doesn't go quite as planned. In The Sandcastle That Lola Built by Megan Maynor, Lola meets many new friends as she builds her dream sandcastle at the beach. Where the Ocean Meets the Sand by Beth Costanzo uses fun sing-songy rhymes to teach kids about the beach. Because of the repetition, this is also a great book to use with your kids who are just learning to read.
Kids' General Adventure Books
Kids' General Adventure Books
For general adventure stories, you can't go wrong with Dr. Seuss' Oh, the Places You'll Go! Wherever You Go by Pat Zietlow Miller is one of my favorite children's books of all time. Little Fox Goes to the End of the World is a 1970s classic by Ann Tompert. And as a huge Julia Donaldson fan, I love Tiddler and The Snail and the Whale for general adventure stories. And for a heartwarming story about adventures with Dad, we love Rory the Dinosaur: Me and My Dad by Liz Climo. This is one of Emmett's favorite books, which he loves reading with his dad.

Other great travel books for kids are A Ticket Around the World by Natalia Diaz, Around the World I Go by Cory J. Anderson, the classic book Maude and Claude Go Abroad by Susan Meddaugh, and The Travel Book from Lonely Travel Kids.

Kids' Chapter Books

Adventure Chapter Books
Adventure Chapter Books
Many chapter books tell fun adventure stories for young readers, like Clarice the Brave by Lisa McMann, which I am currently reading to Emmett. The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo features another popular mouse adventurer.

Many of the classics also tell of daring adventures and incredible journeys:
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum
The Swiss Family Robinson by Johann David Wyss
Kidnapped by Robert Louis Stevenson
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift
The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard Pyle
The Voyages of Doctor Doolittle by Hugh Lofting
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass by Lewis Carroll
Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne

Some of my favorite adventure series are the Harry Potter series by J. K. Rowling and The Chronicles of Narnia series by C. S. Lewis.

Others are set in remarkable locales all over the world. Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote now-classic stories like the Anne of Green Gables series, set in Prince Edward Island, and The Blue Castle, set in Ontario. Another fantastic book series is the Magic Tree House series, as many of them are set in other countries around our diverse planet. Travel to Corfu, Greece in My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell or visit Switzerland with the children's classic Heidi by Johanna Spyri. Your younger children will enjoy traveling to the United Kingdom while reading the Paddington Bear series by Michael Bond.

In the Magic Suitcase books by Chris Oler, your kids will join Molly, a little girl who loves big adventures, as she travels to places like Panama, Barcelona, Rome, and Puerto Rico.

With a world full of wonders waiting to be discovered, the right travel and adventure books can ignite a lifelong passion for exploration in young minds. As they enjoy a wonderful journey through the pages, they will not only gain knowledge about the world but also develop a deeper appreciation for the diversity around them. Let these wonderful books be the beginning of many adventures for your young explorers, fostering a spirit of curiosity and discovery that will stay with them for a lifetime, prompting them to visit exotic locations around the entire globe.
