Essential Tools for Worldschooling
Worldschooling is an educational approach that blends travel with learning, allowing families to explore the world while providing their children with a rich, hands-on education. Whether you're just starting out or you're a seasoned worldschooler, having the right tools can make a huge difference.

To make worldschooling easier, leverage the following tools and resources.

Educational Apps and Platforms

Some of these I covered more thoroughly in my previous post, Worldschooling 101: Choosing Your Worldschooling Curriculum.
  1. Duolingo & Rosetta Stone – Great for learning new languages on the go.
  2. Khan Academy – Offers free courses in math, science, history, and more.
  3. BBC Bitesize – Free educational content for all ages.
  4. Prodigy – A fun way to keep up with math skills through an interactive game.
  5. Google Earth & National Geographic Kids – Perfect for geography lessons and cultural exploration.
  6. Coursera & Udemy – Excellent platforms for parents and older kids to expand their knowledge.
  7. Google Maps - Perfect for teaching your child how to navigate roads and city streets as you drive or walk to new locations.
  8. PBS Kids - Offers educational shows like Sesame Street, Sid the Science Kid (my personal favorite), Super Why!, and Peg + Cat.

Educational Reading Materials

For the Parent Educators

In The Brave Learner: Finding Everyday Magic in Homeschool, Learning, and Life, Julie Bogart encourages a creative and curiosity-driven approach to learning, based on her decades of homeschooling experience.

For the Kids

Travel guides, children’s atlases, local maps, and train and subway maps and timetables are all fantastic reading materials for kids. They will not only practice their reading, but will also learn about your current locale and learn how to read maps.

Books about the location your are heading to are also great ways to practice reading and to prep for the new location. If you are heading to the UK, books like Madeline in London by Ludwig Bemelmans and Katie in London and Katie in Scotland by James Mayhew are all fun picture books to prepare kids for their stay. Headed to Thailand? Prepare your young kids by reading Aya and Bobby Discover Thailand: Land of Smiles by Christina Kristoffersson.

Short-Term REntal and Accomodation Platforms

Finding short-term accommodations may be one of the more difficult parts of worldschooling. Many worldschooling families work remotely and need to ensure that they will have reliable WiFi. I would recommend reaching out to individual hosts prior to booking to confirm that the home not only has WiFi, but that the WiFi is stable.
  1. Airbnb & Vrbo – Ideal for finding short-term housing while traveling. Housing options are often in more residential areas, allowing for a more authentic experience. Hosts will often offer a discount for longer stays (30+ days).
  2. TrustedHousesitters – Stay in homes for free in exchange for pet sitting. Make sure potential hosts know you will have your children with you, as some housesits are not kid-friendly.
  3. Workaway & WWOOF – Cultural exchange opportunities that can provide free stays in exchange for work. Again, make sure potential hosts are aware that you are traveling as a family. Some hosts have only one twin bed or one small room available for travelers.
  4. Nomad Stays – Designed for digital nomads and long-term travelers.

Essential Electronic Equipment

  1. Lightweight Laptop or Tablet – A must-have for online learning, research, and communication.
  2. Kindle or E-Reader – Great for carrying an entire library without the extra weight.
  3. Noise-Canceling Headphones – Helpful for learning in noisy environments.
  4. Power Bank & Universal Travel Adapter – Keeps devices charged on the road.
  5. GoPro or Travel Camera – Perfect for documenting travels and projects.
