Grillin' and Chili-in' - Making new friends and eating good food on the road #rvliving #rvlifestyle #fulltimerving #travelblog
Meeting new friends and eating good food
It's January. We have just returned to Houston after a relaxing trip to Belize. The sun has gone down, and we have decided to hit the hot tub at Hwy 6 RV Resort. We arrive at the pool area, rid ourselves of flip flops and towels, and ease ourselves into the steaming water.

We are soon joined by a man with a quick smile, and we strike up a conversation. I decide I am warm enough and hop in the pool, and am there for only a few minutes before a lady, who seems to know the man in the hot tub, joins me. Before long, we're all friends, chatting about our travels, their fur babies, the beautiful Texas weather, Rod's work, and the pros and cons of living in a home on wheels. Before we disperse back to our homes, we exchange phone numbers.

The following day, we set a date for a cookout. We invite another couple, friends of ours who will soon be living in their own camper full-time, and the six of us enjoy grilled sausage and chicken, grilled and fresh veggies, and desserts.

Two weeks later, just before we leave for our new workamping job in South Texas, Patti and Rod host chili night in their home. We meet Jack and Jill, their cats and trusty traveling companions, as well as Patti and Rod's human friends, Kevin and Sharon. Patti makes a mean pot of chili - actually, two mean pots of chili, one spicier than the other - and, along with cornbread and desserts, Marvin and I each enjoy multiple bowls of the red goodness. After an evening of laughter and good food, we reluctantly say good night and good-bye to our new friends.

But that isn't the end of the story. Patti and Rod have kept in touch with us, and we hope to meet up with them again on the road. A few weeks ago, this Idaho couple was kind enough to answer our questions and to share some RVing tips with us. Keep reading to get to know our friends, Patti and Rod.

How long have you been RVing?

Patti: We were on the road for 20 months! We are now in Idaho at our home for the summer. Then we'll go south for the winter.

Snowbird life is definitely the way to go!

How many states have you visited during your RV travels?

Patti: We have visited 13 states so far and traveled 6,000 miles.

You all have put in a lot of highway time and covered a lot of ground!
In those 6000 miles, which city has been your favorite, and what did you like most about it?

Patti: We loved Nashville for its country music and good friends.

What is your biggest challenge traveling with cats, and how have you overcome that challenge?

Patti: The litter box. Rod solved that one by putting a passage way into the basement of our 5th wheel. The kitties love their little door to their potty.

What is the most beneficial thing you have purchased for use in your RV?

Patti: Our cordless Dyson vacuum is the best! For cooking, I love our crock pot and BBQ grill.
What's the one home comfort you miss most when you are on the road?

Patti: Big showers!! But I also miss having more space in general and not having to deal with black water tanks.

I'm with you on the big showers! It's always a nice treat to stay with family or at a hotel or BNB and enjoy a full-sized shower.
What's one thing that has happened on the road that was really frustrating at the time, but funny when you look back at it?

Patti: Rod flushed the black water tank and left the water on and the gate closed while he answered a phone call. The tank kind of exploded! It shook the RV and cracked the top! $1100.00 and a mobile RV repair later, it was fixed!! I never did find this too funny. We know two other friends who have done the same thing.

Wow! That was an expensive lesson!

So, Patti, while Rod is working, what do you do to occupy your time?

Patti: Recently, a friend taught me how to make jewelry. I love this new hobby.

Yes, I've seen some of your designs! They are so cute!

(Patti and Rod are working on a website for her new jewelry business. We'll update this post when their site is live!)
Alright, so, where to next?

Patti: We will be going up the St. Joe River [in Idaho] camping with family. Then some little jaunts to Glacier National Park [in Montana]. We also want to go to the Oregon Coast.

We're looking forward to camping with family as well. Very few things make us happier than sitting around a campfire with people we love. And we look forward to seeing pictures and hearing stories of your next adventures!

Patti and Rod, thanks so much for answering our questions! We look forward to more chili and BBQ with you in the future!
