Awe-Inspiring Mountain Escapes

Whether you want to climb to the top of a breathtaking mountain peak, surrounded by awe-inspiring vistas, or drive to your unique AirBNB or VRBO situated within the mountains for a quiet, relaxing, tech-free holiday, you'll find options that meet your needs.

In the U.S., enjoy exploring the soaring peaks in the Grand Tetons in Wyoming, the Rockies in Colorado, or the Sierra Nevadas in California. Or visit the smaller ranges like the Poconos in Pennsylvania, the Henry Mountains of Utah, the Ozarks of Arkansas, or the Chisos Mountains in West Texas.

Or travel to one of the world's most beautiful ranges like the Alps in Switzerland, the Andes Mountains of Chile, or the Himalayas of Tibet.

Lace up your hiking boots, pack your backpacks, and set off on scenic trails that lead to hidden waterfalls, panoramic viewpoints, and serene lakes. Your older kids may even enjoy outdoor activities like horseback riding or mountain biking!

Summer Camping Adventures

Exciting Camping Adventures

Pitching a tent, roasting marshmallows over a crackling fire, and falling asleep to the sounds of nature—it's a quintessential camping experience that every family should enjoy.

In the United States, whether you choose a family-friendly resort campground like Jellystone Park with lots of amenities (perfect for younger kids), campgrounds within state parks and national parks with stunning views and great hiking trails (national parks like Grand Canyon National Park or Glacier National Park may be more suited to older kids), or smaller, individually-owned campgrounds with rustic accommodations and options for primitive camping, you can find the perfect level of adventure that you and your family are comfortable with.

While camping, explore nature trails, spot wildlife, and tell stories around the campfire. Encourage your kids to make their own discoveries by organizing a photo scavenger hunt, like this one by Merry About Town. If you're considering an outdoor family vacation in Texas, read Texas: 50 Hikes with Kids. Some of the state parks included in the book, like Sheldon Lake State Park outside Houston, have rustic family campsites available.

Epic Multi-Day Walks

For a "slow travel" experience, consider a long, multi-day walk with your older kids for your next family vacation.

1. Circumnavigate Prince Edward Island on the Island Walk. The walk is pet-friendly and bikes are allowed. It is considered a fairly easy walk, making this excellent for families. Wild camping is not permitted, but you can stay at hotels and B&Bs in the towns, or camp in designated campgrounds. They offer seven different itineraries for shorter routes, or, if you have enough time, you can do the whole 435-mile trail in 5 or so weeks.

2. Walk the 95-mile West Highland Way in Scotland. Wild camping is permitted, pets are allowed, and it takes about a week to travel. Though fairly rugged, this shorter route is perfect for families with older kids.

3. Circumnavigate Mont Blanc on the Tour du Mont Blanc, trekking through three European countries. This 105-mile trail features significant vertical gains and drops and for more is experienced hikers, with a recommended minimum age of 10 years old. Tour groups like this one offer guided tours, and mountain huts with dormitory-style rooms are available along the trail. Plan for about nine days to complete the circle around France, Italy, and Switzerland.

4. Take on the 101-mile Dingle Way Trail in County Kerry, Ireland. This hike is easy to moderate along most of the trail, with a more difficult section around Mount Brandon. This section can be skipped by arranging transportation to the next section. Take the trail in 8 stages, working your way clockwise from Tralee around the Dingle Peninsula. Plan for nine or more days of walking with your experienced hikers. Pets are not allowed, and both guided and self-guided tours are available from various tour companies. Plan to stay at hotels, hostels, b&bs, and guesthouses along the way.

5. Walk  from one section of the Great Wall of China to another. Some sections, like Badaling, are well-maintained, easy to walk, and crowded. Others, like Gubeikou, are merely ruins and much more difficult to walk. Do your research ahead of time to decide which section(s) you'll walk, and ensure that you have pre-arranged transportation or will be in a populated place where transportation options will be available when you leave the wall.

Many other stunning walks are available for adventurous families to tackle, in Japan, in other areas of China, in Australia, throughout South America, and around the world.

Memorable Animal Encounters

Teaching children about the importance of responsible animal encounters is crucial. We have had the extreme pleasure of seeing howler monkeys in Belize at the Community Baboon Sanctuary, bison in Yellowstone National Park, minke whales and puffins off the coast of Iceland, dolphins off the coast of Northern Scotland, red deer in Killarney National Park, axis deer and javelinas in South Texas, toucans and capybaras in Panama, tropical fish in the harbor of Honolulu, alligators along the Creole Nature Trail in Louisiana, and prairie dogs in the Badlands. All of these experiences were made all the more majestic because the animals were in their natural environments, wild and free, in all their beauty.

Animal encounters in the wild are great options for kids of all ages - and for their parents! Perhaps you want to see sea turtles in the Galapagos Islands or the "Big Five" in the Serengeti. Wherever your next getaway takes you, if you see animals in the wild, it's sure to be fun for the entire family.

This summer, take a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse yourself in the wonders of the great outdoors. There's a world of exploration awaiting your family! Embrace the beauty of nature, create unforgettable memories, and strengthen the bonds that tie you together. So for your next family trip, gather your loved ones, pack your sense of adventure, and embark on a summer vacation that will leave you refreshed, inspired, and connected to the natural world!
