Stories Come Alive: Using Travel to Create Immersive Literature Experiences While Worldschooling
Literature is a subject I'm incredibly passionate about, so much so that I have a whole section of my blog dedicated to book lovers! And worldschooling is such an incredible way to bring literature to life!

Read more for ideas on incorporating Literature experiences into your worldschooling adventures.

By connecting stories to real-world experiences, instead of reading in isolation, families can visit the places where novels are set, explore the homes of famous authors, and immerse themselves in the locales that shaped literary masterpieces. This experiential approach helps children develop a deeper understanding of stories while making learning more engaging and memorable.

Books Set in Iconic Locations Around the World

Reading books set in various locations allows children to experience different cultures and landscapes through literature. Here are a few books that pair well with worldschooling adventures:
  • London, England – Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens - Exploring London’s narrow streets and historic landmarks gives context to Dickens’ depiction of 19th-century poverty and social reform. Use your London experiences to integrate a history lesson as well, discussing ways in which London has changed since Dickens' time.
  • Paris, France – The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo - A visit to Notre Dame Cathedral can bring Quasimodo’s world to life, making Hugo’s masterpiece even more impactful. While there, learn about the fire of 2019 and how the famous cathedral is different from its original 13th-centry form through its various reconstruction work.
  • Prince Edward Island, Canada – Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery - A trip to Green Gables Heritage Place lets fans of Anne Shirley walk in her footsteps. For your adventurous readers, consider hiking a portion of the path that circumnavigates the island.
  • Kyoto, Japan – Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden - Strolling through Kyoto’s historic Gion district transports readers into the world described in this novel.
  • Kenya – Born Free by Joy Adamson - A safari through Kenya’s national parks gives readers a real-life glimpse of the wildlife featured in this memoir about raising a lion cub. This experience also offers fantastic zoology and ecology integration opportunities.

Visiting Famous Authors' Residences and Writing Locations

Many beloved authors lived and worked in places that directly influenced their writing. Worldschooling families can visit these locations to better understand the inspiration behind famous works:
  • The Brontë Parsonage Museum (Haworth, England) – The home of the Brontë sisters, where they wrote Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall.
  • Ernest Hemingway’s House (Key West, Florida, USA) – Explore Hemingway’s Spanish colonial-style home and see the six-toed cats that still roam the property.
  • Mark Twain’s House (Hartford, Connecticut, USA) – This beautifully preserved home offers insight into the life of the author of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
  • J.R.R. Tolkien’s Oxford (Oxford, England) – Visit The Eagle and Child pub, where Tolkien met with fellow writer C.S. Lewis, and explore the university where he taught.
  • Shakespeare’s Birthplace (Stratford-upon-Avon, England) – See the home where the world’s most famous playwright was born and gain a deeper understanding of Elizabethan England.

Museums Dedicated to Literary Legends

Museums dedicated to authors and their works allow worldschooling families to dive even deeper into literature. Some must-visit literary museums include:
  • The Sherlock Holmes Museum (London, England) – Step into 221B Baker Street and explore artifacts dedicated to Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective.
  • The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre (Great Missenden, England) – Perfect for young readers, this museum celebrates the life and works of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory author Roald Dahl.
  • Hans Christian Andersen Museum (Odense, Denmark) – Explore the fairy tale world of the writer behind The Little Mermaid and The Ugly Duckling.
  • The Jane Austen Centre (Bath, England) – Gain insight into Austen’s life and how the city of Bath influenced her novels.
  • The Edgar Allan Poe Museum (Richmond, Virginia, USA) – Learn about the master of gothic literature and see artifacts from his life.

Sculptures of Famous Authors Around the World

Statues and monuments dedicated to famous writers provide another way to engage with literature while worldschooling. These sculptures often commemorate an author's legacy and sometimes stand in places that influenced their works.
  • The Scott Monument (Edinburgh, Scotland) – This towering Gothic monument honors Sir Walter Scott, the author of Ivanhoe and Waverley. Visitors can climb its 287 steps for panoramic views of Edinburgh.
  • The Shakespeare Monument (London, England) – Located in Westminster Abbey’s Poets’ Corner, this tribute to William Shakespeare stands among memorials to other literary greats.
  • Mark Twain Statue (Hannibal, Missouri, USA) – Overlooking the Mississippi River, this statue of Twain celebrates the setting of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
  • Miguel de Cervantes Statue (Madrid, Spain) – In Plaza de España, a grand monument pays homage to the author of Don Quixote, featuring sculptures of both Cervantes and his iconic characters.
  • Oscar Wilde Memorial Sculpture (Dublin, Ireland) – A playful statue of Wilde reclines on a rock in Merrion Square Park, accompanied by stone pillars inscribed with his famous witticisms.
Visiting these sculptures allows children to engage with an author's legacy in a tangible way, connecting literature to real-world history and artistic representation.

By integrating literature with your travel itinerary, parents can turn reading into an adventure. Visiting the locations tied to a book or an author transforms reading from a passive activity into an immersive experience. This hands-on approach not only strengthens a child’s appreciation for literature but also deepens their understanding of history, geography, and culture.

Learning literature through worldschooling allows children to see the world through an author’s eyes, making stories feel more tangible and meaningful. Whether it’s walking through Dickensian London, standing in front of Hemingway’s writing desk, or gazing at the landscapes that inspired Tolkien’s Middle-earth, every literary journey enhances a child's education in ways that traditional schooling cannot.

For families who love both travel and reading, worldschooling is a perfect way to combine the best of both worlds. By following in the footsteps of great authors and their characters, children develop not only a love of books but also a deeper connection to the world around them.
