When people think of Croatia, most conjure up scenes of pristine beaches and jagged coastlines. But Croatia's vibrant and enchanting capital city of Zagreb is a captivating fusion of old-world charm and modern allure. As you explore its cobbled streets and historic squares, you'll be captivated by the city's rich cultural heritage, reflected in its majestic architecture, intriguing museums, lively arts scene, and vibrant outdoor markets. Read more to learn what to expect on your visit to Zagreb.Cafe CultureI don't know the exact statistics, but my estimate is that cafes that do not serve food outnumber restaurants that serve food by about 4 to 1. Although you can find fabulous restaurants throughout the city, if you are looking for food, make sure that that busy establishment with the adorable patio that you've stumbled upon serves food, as many of them do not. *Even McDonald's serves an excellent lineup of coffee. Smoking CultureWe were shocked by the vast number of people in Zagreb who still smoke. Cafes, as long as they don't serve food, can allow smoking, even indoors. If you have children or a breathing condition, make sure you are frequenting an establishment that serves food, even if all you want is a beverage. Dog-FriendlyIt's common to not only see dogs walking along with their owners throughout the city, but surprisingly, many of those pretty pooches are off-leash. If you are a fellow dog-lover, this is great, as it affords you the opportunity to pet dogs that approach you. If you are not a dog-lover, this could range from a minor annoyance to a panic-inducing situation. Regarding KidsLocals were generally very friendly with our son, but don't expect to find kids' menus or high chairs at restaurants. Fortunately we were always able to find something that he would eat, even if it was toasted cheese sandwiches and fried potatoes. We were able to supplement his meals with fresh fruits purchased from the local markets, as well as tasty pastries. FoodTraditional Croatian cuisine is a delightful blend of Mediterranean and Eastern European influences. It features a rich array of fresh seafood, succulent meats, aromatic herbs, and delectable pastries that showcase the country's diverse culinary heritage. You'll also find Western influences with pizza joints and burger and sandwich spots throughout the city. Don't pass up the bakeries! Every morning we popped into one of the local bakeries for fresh, tasty breads and pastries. Can't-Miss SightsStart at Ban Jelačić Square, explore the Dolac Farmer's Market, take a short ride on the funicular, climb to the top of Latrščak Tower, wander along the Strossmayer Promenade, and walk through the Gric Tunnel. Chocolate lovers should definitely visit the Museum of Chocolate, where you'll indulge in various miniature chocolates as well as liquid chocolate stations throughout the museum. Walk around the Green Horseshoe and admire the natural and architectural beauty. Though the interior is temporarily closed for remodeling, the Zagreb Cathedral adds remarkable beauty to the Zagreb skyline and deserves a closer look at the exterior. Whether you're savoring the delectable local cuisine, mingling with friendly locals at bustling markets, or exploring the various cultural and historical sites, Zagreb promises an unforgettable travel experience that will leave you spellbound at every turn. Know what to expect, pack you bags, and enjoy your trip to Zagreb! You may also like:
